What is the difference between the four sports?
Start with the kind of movement that interests you rather than a ranking of the toughest or most effective sport. Would you prefer working with your hands and feet while standing, or learning positions and transitions on the ground?
- Boxing: punches, guard, distance and footwork. A focused starting point if you want to learn a hand-based striking sport.
- Kickboxing: punches and kicks, with additional work on balance and distance. Consider it if you want to use both hands and legs.
- BJJ and grappling: positions, grips, control and transitions, especially on the ground. Close partner contact is part of the sport.
- MMA: combines standing, clinch and ground work. Consider it if you want to explore the transitions between several areas.
Which martial art is best for a beginner?
There is no universal best choice. Fewer permitted techniques do not automatically make boxing easy, and a broader range of techniques does not automatically make MMA unsuitable for a beginner. A suitable group, understandable guidance and an appropriate pace matter more than a label.
HD Boxing introduces beginners step by step. Explain your experience and goals before your visit. If you need English-language support, ask about the coaching language for the specific session; these English pages are not a promise that every class is taught in English.
Do you want partner training or a start without sparring?
Technical practice, partner drills and sparring are different activities. Competition is not compulsory at HD Boxing. That does not establish that every session has no contact or sparring. Ask what the planned class includes and explain any boundaries before your appointment.
If close partner contact is not what you want, say so rather than relying on a course name. You can also discuss the coached Functional Fitness offer and the gym’s fitness area. Those are distinct options, not a claim that every boxing class is a contact-free fitness class.
Which training fits around work and family?
Compare the actual timetable with your week and travel to Schubertstraße 4 in Ingolstadt. Class times, open gym and building opening hours are different. A theoretically ideal sport is less useful if you cannot make the appropriate session.
Women can choose the separate women’s group as well as the mixed programme. Children aged 4–8 and teens aged 9–13 have their own entries. One-to-one personal training is arranged separately. Your decision is therefore also about the right group and level of guidance.
Questions to ask before choosing a class
You do not need to buy equipment or know combinations before asking for a first appointment. Give the team enough information to discuss a suitable introduction.
- What do I want from training: a new sport, regular exercise or a specific skill?
- What experience or training break should the team know about?
- What partner contact or sparring format does the session involve?
- Which clothing and equipment are required, and is anything available to borrow?
- Is English-language support available for this session, and what are the trial conditions?
Common questions
Do I need to start with boxing before MMA?
Not necessarily. HD Boxing’s MMA offer includes beginners. Discuss your experience and goals rather than assuming that another course is a prerequisite.
Should I choose a sport for self-defence?
A combat-sport class is not the same as a dedicated self-defence programme. If personal safety is your main goal, ask about the specific course content and qualifications, and read our guide to the limits of sporting training.
